User Switching: Quick Review
The User Switching plugin allows administrators to switch between user accounts at the click of a button. It’s super useful for test environments where you have to test out theme and plugin features through different user roles.
A Developer’s Perspective
The thing I like best about the User Switching plugin is that it lets you test out WordPress websites thoroughly. And as a developer building sites for clients, it’s very important for me to make sure the site looks pristine and works smoothly for all user roles.
The plugin itself works through the Users screen and lets you switch to any user account that you’ve (the administrator) created. When you switch an account, you’re essentially logged into your website’s admin panel through the other user’s account and with their user privileges.
Pros
- Speeds up theme/plugin testing.
- Compatible with WordPress Multisite.
Cons
- No cons; does what it’s supposed to do.
An Average User’s Perspective
As an average user, I was able to view my WordPress website through different user roles with the User Switching plugin. It was incredibly easy to use and I liked how the switch back to admin link was visible and accessible throughout.
Though I still had to create accounts for different test user profiles, the plugin allowed me to quickly test out my sites different features without having to manually log in and log out every time. A feature that I’d like to see in this plugin is pre-created test user profiles for each of the default user roles in WordPress.
Pros
- Incredibly easy to use.
- Lets you view and use your site as a user with different user privileges.
Cons
- Doesn’t have pre-created test user profiles.
To Sum It Up
If you’re building client sites then the User Switching plugin is a must-have. It’ll speed up the process of testing out your WordPress website thoroughly for all of the different user roles.
And if you’re an average user who’s building their own site, it’s a good idea to make sure all the features you have on it work properly. The User Switching plugin lets you test it out for yourself without the trouble of logging in and out every time.
