Are you optimizing your images to save storage space and bandwidth? What if all of your images were optimized automatically as soon as you uploaded them?

EWWW Image Optimizer: Quick Review

The EWWW Image Optimizer automatically optimizes images as you upload them. And if you already have a bunch of images on your site then the plugin will bulk-optimize them for you.

For more information about the plugin’s performance, be sure to check out Rafay’s review of the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin for Design Bombs in which he puts it to the test with both PNG and JPG image file types. And if you’d like to try it out for yourself then head over to InMotion Hosting’s tutorial of the plugin.

A Developer’s Perspective

As a WordPress developer, I use the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin on all of my clients’ websites. It delivers excellent results and keeps track of images that have already been optimized so you don’t accidentally re-optimize them during bulk image optimization.

Another really neat feature that I found was incredibly useful was scheduled optimization. You simply enable it from the settings page and the plugin detects un-optimized images regularly and optimizes them. And if your client has image files stored in separate folders, the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin handles those, too.

Pros

  • Automatically optimizes images as you upload them.
  • Lets you enable scheduled image optimization for specific folders.
  • Optimizes images uploaded by/through other themes/plugins.

Cons

  • Lossy compression for JPG images is not available with the free plugin.

An Average User’s Perspective

As an average user, I’m happy with the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin. It automatically optimizes all of the images I upload to my site’s Media Library so I don’t have to optimize them manually. Aside from this, I noticed that the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin optimized images a lot faster than other image optimization plugins for WordPress and gave better compression results.

In my personal opinion, the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin makes for a great addition to any WordPress website that’s image-intensive and has limited storage space on their hosting server e.g. is on a shared hosting account. And the best part is that even if you already have a lot of images on your site, the plugin will simply filter out the un-optimized ones and bulk-optimize them for you.

Pros

  • Lets you bulk-optimize images.
  • Optimizes all of the different sizes of each image i.e. thumbnail, medium, medium_large, and large.
  • Improves page loading times.

Cons

  • Doesn’t tell you how much space you’ve saved in total after each bulk image optimization or over a particular period of time.

To Sum It Up

If your client is running an image-intensive WordPress site then you should, without a doubt, set them up with the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin. Amazing features aside, you clients won’t have to mess around with the plugin at all – it works automatically right out of the box.

And if you’re an average user who’s looking for an easy way to save some storage space on your server and improve your site’s loading time, you should definitely try the EWWW Image Optimizer plugin out for yourself and see the difference.
